2026 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ Preview – New Model Launch in Japan

By Steve Laser

The all-new 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ went on sale in Japan this month. The compact SUV delivers Land Cruiser style and off-road capabilities in a smaller package. The FJ joins the trio of Land Cruiser models already offered in Japan, including the flagship 300 Series, midrange 250, and rugged Land Cruiser 70.

Toyota says the new FJ was crafted with an easy-to-handle size while retaining the essence of the Land Cruiser, including reliability, durability, and off-road performance. Thanks to the adoption of heritage styling cues, the FJ is instantly recognizable as a Land Cruiser.

Up front, the FJ features a horizontal grille with the “TOYOTA” script logo, flanked by U-shaped design headlights, and a split bumper with removable corners. Exterior color choices include Smoky Blue and Oxide Bronze Metallic.

The side view highlights the short wheelbase, square cabin, low beltline to improve outward visibility, and bold fender and lower side panel cladding. While the roof rails are standard, the above photo shows an optional dealer-installed accessory bodyside decal.

The new FJ features an exterior-mounted spare tire that brings to mind Land Cruiser heritage models. The tailgate is designed to swing open like a door, providing easy access to the cargo compartment.

Toyota employs the rugged IMV-series ladder-frame platform with a high-mount double-wishbone front suspension and 4-link rigid with lateral-rod rear suspension for the FJ. A 2.7-liter gas engine, 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission, part-time four-wheel drive, Downhill Assist Control, Hillstart Assist Control, and an electric rear differential lock are included.

FJ is available in a single VX grade with a five-passenger interior. Standard features include a 7.0-inch multi-information display, 12.3-inch display audio system compatible with Connected Navigation support, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® compatibility, and ETC2.0 with VICS function.

Five-passenger seating includes an 8-way power driver’s seat, 4-way manual front passenger’s seat, and 60/40-split sliding and reclining rear seat. Toyota Safety Sense features include a Panoramic View Monitor, Pre-collision System with pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Alert, Blind-Spot Monitor, Radar Cruise Control, and Road Sign Assist.

The new Land Cruiser FJ is built by Toyota Motor Thailand Co., Ltd.
