Mitsuoka Motor, Japan’s boutique automaker, is planning to introduce a new model called “LA1” on Nov. 26. With styling inspired by the first generation of the Chevrolet Corvette, LA1 is likely to be based on the Japan-market Mazda Roadster, also known as the MX-5.
Mitsuoka previously offered a retro-roadster model, called Rock Star, that was inspired by the second-generation Corvette, and based on the Mazda Roadster. Approximately 200 units of the Rock Star were built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Mitsuoka Motor.
Once again, Mitsuoka appears to have performed a remarkable job in transforming a car like the Mazda Roadster into a mini-Vette. LA1 sports attractive styling cues, including chrome bumpers and trim, rocker panels, quad headlights, sporty two-tone side coves, and curvaceous body panels. More details are planned to be announced closer to the LA1 launch.
LA1 is expected to join the current lineup of Mitsuoka models, including the M55 (based on the Honda Civic), Buddy SUV (Toyota RAV4), and retro-classics Viewt (Nissan March), and Ryugi (Corolla Axio).
Mitsuoka said that its founder, Susumu Mitsuoka, had once seen a kit car in Los Angeles that combined a vintage appearance with modern mechanicals. He wanted to make a car like that too. His desire to build dream machines continues to this day with Mitsuoka’s evolving model lineup.
Mitsuoka Motor creates (remanufactures) built-to-order vehicles, largely by hand, on the donor platforms at its plant in Toyama City. Showrooms are located across Japan.
