2027 Nissan Terrano PHEV Concept – Surprise Return of Iconic SUV

By Steve Laser

Nissan revealed a new Terrano PHEV concept at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2026) on April 24. The rugged-looking SUV features dynamic styling, along with the return of an iconic model name.

The bold design of the new Terrano brings to mind the upcoming return of the Nissan Xterra SUV for the U.S. market next year. It is unknown if the two vehicles will be related, beyond sharing a spirit of adventure.

Terrano PHEV features an array of illuminated elements, including the Nissan script and full-width positioning LEDs. High ground clearance, aggressive lower styling, accessory style lighting, and a rooftop platform, indicate the new model is designed for off-road excursions.

The rear view highlights an externally-mounted spare tire that brings to mind Terrano models from the 1980s. The tire carrier likely swings out to allow access to the tailgate, which could be a two-piece split design.

While specs and powertrain details have yet to be announced, the new Terrano appears to be based on a body-on-frame platform. It possibly could share its PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) powertrain components with the new Frontier Pro PHEV pickup to be built in China.

Nissan says the production version of the new Terrano is scheduled to be unveiled within one year and is also intended for selected global markets. Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Company is the Chinese joint venture of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

1986 Terrano Flashback

Terrano was originally introduced in August 1986 in Japan. It went on to become a million-plus selling global vehicle, along with an international sibling to the similar Nissan Pathfinder. The Japan-market Terrano (below) was powered by a TD27, 2.7-liter 4-cylinder OHV diesel engine teamed with a 5-speed manual transmission and part-time four-wheel drive.

Major milestones for the early Japan-market Terrano included availability of the VG30 engine in 1987, a diesel-turbo engine in 1988, a 4-door model in 1989, a wide-body model in 1993, a second-generation model in 1995, and a QD32ETi diesel engine in 1996.

Note: Features and launch timing for future China-market Terrano vehicles are subject to change without notice.
