2025 Toyota Urban Cruiser Preview – e-Collection Highlights New Electric SUV Features

By Steve Laser

Toyota is using a creative approach to help launch its new all-electric 2025 Urban Cruiser SUV in Europe. To generate interest ahead of the product reveal, Toyota announced the virtual “e-collection” concepts. While the model name itself tugs on the heartstrings for those who remember the popular Urban Cruiser compact (scroll down for 2009 model).

The e-collection (above) includes the pop-up ThinkTent for remote work, ChirpM8 digital pet, AdjusTable modular table, power-generating DualGuitar, traction-enhancing AWD Sneakers, and wearable Notification Nails. These conceptual visions of the future call attention to attributes of features in the new Urban Cruiser.

The 2025 Urban Cruiser is a B-segment SUV with attractive styling. While it may be compact on the outside, thanks to a long wheelbase and flexible interior, it’s big on the inside (ThinkTent).

Urban Cruiser is slightly larger than the current Yaris Cross hybrid, and rides on a new BEV platform. It features a sporty, modern design that Toyota previewed with the Urban SUV concept introduced at last year’s Kenshiki Forum in Brussels.

Two battery sizes are offered, 49 kWh and 61 kWh (DualGuitar), with lithium-iron phosphate technology. Available all-wheel drive (AWD Sneakers) adds a 48kW rear motor and includes Downhill Assist Control plus a Trail Mode. Output is initially rated at 106 kW (144 DIN hp) FWD, 128 kW (174 hp) with the larger battery, and 135 kW (184 hp) with AWD.

While estimated charging times and range have not been announced, Toyota plans to offer its convenient HomeCharge domestic wallbox, plus the MyToyota app that provides state-of-charge and public charging station information for customers.

Urban Cruiser delivers an SUV-inspired interior with sporty and versatile seating. The horizontal instrument panel, along with a high seating position, improve outward visibility. Available ambient lighting allows the driver to select from 12 different colors to set the mood.

High-tech features include a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, and 10.1-inch entertainment system with navigation and Apple CarPlay® smartphone integration (Notification Nails). Enhanced listening pleasure with JBL premium audio is on the list of options.

The rear seat is designed for passenger and cargo carrying convenience with a split-folding 40-20-40 style and reclining seatbacks. Also included is a handy sliding feature that can increase the space between the first and second rows (AdjusTable).

Urban Cruiser’s roster of safety and driver assist features (ChirpM8) includes a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane keep assist, and an available 360-degree camera system.

2009 Urban Cruiser

It was a different automotive world when the Urban Cruiser went on sale in Europe during 2009. This B-segment compact with urban-friendly dimensions was also sold in Japan as the Ist and in America as the Scion xD. In addition to trendy 5-passenger hatchback styling, Euro models offered a 1.3-liter gas engine with Dual VVT-i plus Stop & Start technology, and a 1.4-liter D-4D diesel engine with available AWD.

Note: Prototype 2025 models are shown in this story. Features and specifications for future European market models are preliminary and subject to change without notice.
