2018 Toyota Vellfire Executive Lounge – “Lexus” of Minivans Gets A Bolder Look

By Steve & Tamami Laser

When we tested the Toyota Voxy Hybrid in Nagoya last year, we liked its aggressively styled front fascia and grille. Those who crave an even bolder look can opt for its newly updated sibling, the Toyota Vellfire, that goes on sale at Toyota Netz dealers across Japan this week.

Vellfire (and its twin called Alphard which is sold at Toyopet dealers) gains a remarkably flashy new grille flanked by new LED headlights and lower bumper fascia. The look is so bold that it could wear a Lexus badge (if Lexus decided to sell vans in Japan).

Under the hood, Vellfire offers an upgraded 3.5-liter direct-injection V6 engine (2GR-FKS) with Direct Shift 8-speed automatic transmission. Also available is a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine (2AR-FE) with Super CVT-i and 2.5-liter THS II Hybrid (2AR-FXE) with E-Four AWD.

Styling updates at the rear include a larger bright garnish and new combination lamps. Toyota says it improved ride comfort and body rigidity with increased structural adhesives. The van continues to employ double-wishbone rear suspension.

Interior changes for Executive Lounge models include a newly available Black and White motif with white woodgrain trim and premium nappa leather-trimmed seats.

Luxurious Executive Lounge seating offers an ottoman function for increased comfort. Heated and ventilated seats, a stowable table and other amenities like a wide-screen entertainment system keep executives happy on the highways.

Meter cluster trim for Vellfire goes more upscale with an enhanced appearance and lighting that can change colors to enhance cabin ambience.

Vellfire and Alphard gain second-generation Toyota Safety Sense with new cyclist detection in the daytime and pedestrian detection at night. Other features include Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Radar Cruise Control, and Adaptive High Beam.
