Nissan Sakura EV with New Ao-Solar Extender – Japan Mobility Show 2025

By Steve Laser

Nissan says the Sakura is Japan’s top-selling EV for the past three consecutive years. Now it’s getting another feather in its cap, in the form of a new roof-mounted solar power generating system. A Sakura fitted with a prototype of Nissan’s new Ao-Solar Extender is heading to the Japan Mobility Show 2025.

Designed to fit neatly on the roof of the all-electric mini-vehicle (Kei car), Ao-Solar Extender features flexible charging. It can charge the batteries while the Sakura is parked, and includes a sliding extension to increase the solar panel area.

Ao-Solar is also functional while the vehicle is in motion. With the panel extension retracted, Sakura maintains its sleek, aero styling and dynamic good looks. Nissan combined the Japanese term for blue sky (aozora), with the word solar, to create the brand name Ao-Solar.

The above infographic from Nissan highlights the potential for Ao-Solar power generation: Up to 500 watts with the panel extended, 300w when the panel is closed, 80w during rainy weather, and 0w at nighttime.

According to Nissan’s research, Sakura owners typically drive their EVs for short distances. “Solar-generated power could nearly eliminate the need for grid-based charging for a significant portion of owners,” says Nissan. Ao-Solar could also serve as an emergency power source. Of course, Sakura retains its ability for conventional, plug-in charging options.

The Nissan team that developed the system in-house estimates that Sakura with Ao-Solar “can generate enough solar electricity to power up to 3,000 km of driving” annually (and notes that actual mileage may vary, depending on sunlight conditions).

Sakura’s four-passenger interior features a contemporary look. There’s a twin-spoke steering wheel, “sofa-design” seats, a 7-inch Advanced Drive Assist Display, electric shifter, Eco, Standard, and Sport drive modes, plus an available 9-inch NissanConnect navigation system.

Ao-Solar Extender remains a concept for now. However, Nissan adds that the system, which originated within an internal idea contest, “is planned for future commercial launch.”

The Japan Mobility Show replaced the long-running Tokyo Motor Show. General public days are scheduled for Nov. 1-9, at Tokyo Big Sight, in the Ariake district of Koto-ku. Nissan plans to display Sakura Ao-Solar Extender in the Tokyo Future Tour “City Life zone.”

Notes: Sakura was Japan’s top-selling EV from FY2022 to FY2024, according to Nissan. The Ao-Solar Extender is a prototype system and is not currently for sale.
