Nissan Micra-Wave Cooks Micra-Chips – Vehicle-to-Load V2L Demo

By Steve Laser

The new Nissan Micra EV features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability that can supply power to small electric devices. To demonstrate this technology, the all-electric Micra recently powered a microwave (aka “Micra-wave”) and cooked tasty chips (“Micra-chips”) at an event in the UK.

Auto journalists were treated to the snacks during the SMMT Test Day on May 21, at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground, in Bedfordshire. SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) said that more than 170 vehicles from some 34 brands were available for test drives.

Nissan customized the exterior of a microwave oven with a stylized image of Japan’s Mount Fuji to create the Micra-wave. Power from the Micra’s main battery, via a V2L adapter (a Nissan accessory), can be used for small appliances, such as a microwave, mini-fridge, a laptop computer, or camping gear.

The chips cooked by the Micra-wave look delicious. And so does the Nissan Micra. The new electric city car, designed and built in Europe, brings back a familiar model name. It joins the all-new LEAF, Ariya, plus an upcoming all-electric Juke, and a planned A-segment EV.

The sixth generation of the iconic hatchback offers a choice of battery options. Nissan UK says the 40kWh Engage model has a range of up to 196 miles (WLTP), while the range for the 52kWh Advance is up to 257 miles.

Micra Engage includes a 7-inch combi-meter, 10.1-inch center screen, NissanConnect, plus wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. Advance adds a 10.1-inch combi-meter, NissanConnect Navi with Google Built-in, and wireless phone charger. The top Evolve includes a Harman/Kardon® sound system.

In addition to a Mount Fuji icon on the center console, interior ambience themes feature Modern, Audacious, and Chill. Color choices offer black cloth upholstery, blue synthetic leather, and cream-gray synthetic leather. Micra also features Nissan driver-assistance and safety features.
