2025 Toyota Alphard & Vellfire PHEV Preview – New Plug-in Hybrid & Spacious Lounge

By Steve Laser

Toyota introduced the fourth generation of its popular Alphard (below) and Vellfire minivans two years ago in Japan. In addition to a complete redesign, the minivan duo received new high-tech features, increased comfort, greater luxury, a smoother ride, and improved driving dynamics.

Initial powertrain choices included gas engines, plus a fuel-efficient hybrid system (HEV). At the time, Toyota said that Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) versions are planned for the future. The future has arrived, and new PHEVs have joined the lineup.

Customers in Japan can opt for the flagship luxury Alphard Executive Lounge model equipped with the new plug-in PHEV system, or self-charging HEV. The base Alphard X grade is offered only as an HEV, while the midrange Z grade features a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, or available HEV system.

The sporty Vellfire lineup is also topped with an Executive Lounge model that features the choice of PHEV or HEV systems. The Vellfire Z Premier grade is powered by an exclusive 2.4-liter Turbo gas engine or the HEV system.

Alphard and Vellfire Executive Lounge grades fitted with the new PHEV system offer the benefit of BEV mode driving, using only electricity from the battery, for “daily chauffeured trips.”

The PHEV system features a 2.5-liter gas engine, E-CVT, a high-output density drive motor, large-capacity lithium-ion battery, and standard E-Four AWD. Maximum output is rated at 225 kW (306 PS). BEV-mode driving range on a full charge is estimated at 73 km.

Standard and rapid charging functions are available, with an estimated 38 minutes to 80 percent of full charge (according Toyota’s in-house measurements), using a quick charging station with output of 50 kW or more. PHEV models also include an external power supply with max 1,500W (AC 100V), and Vehicle to Home (V2H) system.

Alphard and Vellfire Executive Lounge PHEV models come with luxurious six-passenger seating featuring Premium Nappa leather upholstery. The well-appointed Alphard cabin (above) features power reclining second-row seats with memory, power ottoman extensions, a rotating and retractable table, and a 14-inch rear seat entertainment system.

There’s a 12.3-inch TFT multi-information display plus a head-up display for the driver, a 14-inch display audio system (with available connected navigation), Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, T-Connect system, JBL® sound with 15 speakers, USB-C, and ETC 2.0 unit.

Alphard Spacious Lounge

Toyota Auto Body, builder of the Alphard, Vellfire and other vehicles, has developed a specially fitted four-passenger model called the Alphard Spacious Lounge. Based on the Executive Lounge, Spacious Lounge is said to offer the most luxurious and relaxing space in Alphard history.

Designed primarily as a chauffeur-driven vehicle, enhanced comfort features provide luxurious transport for VIPs and special occasions. Spacious Lounge is offered with HEV and the new PHEV powertrains.

Spacious Lounge features two special rear seats for first-class travel. In addition to increased legroom, the power seats include forward and backward adjustment for the ottoman, built-in speakers for the headrests, plus smartphone holders and chargers.

Additional features include a large-capacity refrigerator behind the front seats, a tray for holding luggage or other items, and a retractable curtain to provide extra privacy for rear seat passengers. The cargo area behind the second row offers a valet rod for hanging clothes, and floorspace to accommodate up to four golf bags.

Note: Features and specifications apply to Japan market models and are subject to change without notice.
