Small car specialist Toyota has introduced big changes for the popular Aygo X in Europe. The compact crossover receives a new hybrid powertrain for the first time, and offers a new GR Sport model featuring styling and performance upgrades.
While all Aygo X models receive enhanced good looks with new front styling, the GR Sport gains some unique elements. Color treatments include a Bi-tone+ exterior with gloss black hood and roof, plus available metallic Mustard body color.
GR Sport receives a G-pattern mesh grille with the GR logo, LED lighting, and unique 18-inch five-spoke machine-finish alloy wheels. The fun-to-drive factor is said to be enhanced with specially tuned shocks and springs, along with revised power steering for sharper response.
Aygo X is powered by a new 1.5-liter 3-cylinder DOHC gas engine with VVT-i and direct injection, plus a front-mounted electric motor. Combined output is rated at 116 DIN hp (59 kW) and 141 Nm torque. Power has increased (+44 DIN hp) compared to the previous model that featured a 1.0-liter gas engine without the hybrid system.
Toyota developed a creative battery packaging strategy to accommodate the short wheelbase of the Aygo X. “For the first time in a Toyota hybrid, the two stacks of battery cells are positioned alongside each other across the width of the floor in a longitudinal layout under the rear seats,” said Toyota Europe.
GR Sport interior details include sporty black and gray accents with piano black highlights and GR logos, a three-spoke GR steering wheel with synthetic leather, and GR Sport floor mats with gray stitching. The front seats are trimmed with SakuraTouch® and Dinamica suede-style inserts.
High-tech features include a new 7-inch digital combi-meter for the driver, a 10.5-inch Toyota Smart Connect Multimedia system, wireless smartphone connectivity, and two USB-C ports. A new wireless device charger, digital key, and JBL audio system are also available.
Safety and driver-assist features include a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection, Lane Trace Assist, Intelligent front and rear parking sensors with clearance sonar and automatic braking, Emergency Steering Assist, Road Sign Assist, and Intersection Turn Assist.
Created for the European market, Aygo X was developed by Toyota Motor Europe in Belgium, and originally launched in 2022. It rides on the GA-B platform shared with the Euro Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross. Aygo X is built at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ).
