Nissan artfully blends the past, present, and future with the launch of the all-new Micra EV. While it brings back a familiar model name, the sixth generation of the iconic hatchback gains an all-electric powertrain, futuristic styling with retro cues, and offers the latest in-car technology and driver assistance systems.
The new B-segment Micra is the latest entry in an expanding lineup of EV models that Nissan plans for Europe. It will join the all-new LEAF, an upcoming all-electric Juke, and a planned A-segment EV, giving Nissan a quartet of new electric vehicles by 2027.
With creative styling developed at Nissan Design Europe in London, Micra wears whimsical touches, including signature front lighting elements that bring to mind the round headlights of past Micra models. When the driver approaches the car, the lights perform a “welcome wink.”
Micra offers two battery choices, with the 40kWh featuring range up to 317km (198 miles), and the larger 52kWh up to 416km (260 miles) WLTP. Charging time, with DC fast charging up to 100 kW, is estimated at 15-to-80 percent in 30 minutes.
Micra features V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability that can supply power to small electric devices. Nissan says it also plans to offer V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) integration for Micra. V2G systems typically offer the flexibility for bidirectional charging, with the ability to return stored energy back to the grid.
Trim levels vary by market. For example, Micra offers Engage, Advance, and Evolve trims for the UK. Interior ambience themes include Modern, Chill, and Audacious. Color choices offer black cloth upholstery, blue synthetic leather with orange stitching, and cream-gray synthetic leather.
Available features include 48-color ambient lighting, automatic air conditioning, heated seats and steering wheel, four modes of regenerative braking, and e-Pedal. The base trim includes a 7-inch TFT combi-meter, 10.1-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, along with NissanConnect.
Top trims are fitted with dual 10.1-inch displays, and NissanConnect with Google Built-in, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. A Harman/Kardon® sound system is also available. The NissanConnect app is said to allow owners the ability to remotely adjust things like the cabin temperature and also check battery status.
Driver assist features for Micra include Autonomous Emergency Braking, Emergency Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Departure Warning. Blind Spot Warning, ProPILOT Assist with Navi-link, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, and parking support are also available.
Micra rides on the AmpR small EV platform, shared with the Renault R5, and will be built at the Ampere ElectriCity plant in Douai, France.
The original Micra made its debut way back in 1983. Since then, Nissan has sold some six million units globally. And while the Micra was called the Nissan March in Japan and other markets, it’s unlikely that the new Micra EV will make the journey to America.
