Not long after the Lexus LC 500 coupe was introduced, we had the chance to complete a weeklong test drive. We wrapped up our review by saying, “We love the styling, the performance, the handling; we love everything about it.” And now that Lexus has revealed the production model of the new LC 500 Convertible, we’re falling in love all over again.
We knew that Lexus was serious about building a convertible LC when they rolled out a prototype at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. This summer, a camouflaged development prototype wowed the crowds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. And now, the real deal has arrived at the LA Auto Show.

Lexus says it wanted the convertible to maintain similar handling dynamics to the coupe. So its engineers employed computer-aided engineering (CAE) to add body stiffening components, including structural braces, and a Performance Damper®* for ride comfort. Instead of a heavy hardtop, the convertible has a four-layer soft top that automatically retracts in about 15 seconds.
In line with the LC coupe’s “Exhilarating Performance” driving qualities, the convertible is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine, rated at 471 horsepower and 398 lb.-ft. of torque. It transfers output to the rear wheels via a Direct Shift 10-speed automatic transmission.
In addition to all the luxury goodies one would expect in a Lexus LC, the convertible adds Active Noise Cancellation, sound insulation, and absorption materials to help suppress unwanted noise inside the car.
The LC 500 Convertible offers four-season comfort for passengers with the Lexus Climate Concierge. This system automatically controls the air conditioning, heated seats, new neck heaters, and steering wheel heater whether the top is up or down.
High-tech features include a 10.3-inch multimedia display with voice-activated navigation, Apple CarPlay® and new Android Auto™, plus Lexus Enform Remote and Destination Assist. The Lexus Safety System+ is standard, and so are hidden active roll bars, designed to automatically deploy when a rollover is detected.
Lexus is showing the new LC 500 Convertible Inspiration Series at the LA Auto Show. Offered with a Structural Blue exterior and white interior, a special blue soft top, and 21-inch wheels, just 100 units of this limited edition will be available when the car goes on sale in summer 2020. Regular production models offer black or beige tops, and a palette of enticing exterior colors including Infrared, Cadmium Orange, and Flare Yellow.
