Shanghai Surprise! – First Look at New Honda Concept D Crossover

By Steve & Tamami Laser; with Nahoko Osuka reporting from Japan

We were just getting ready to call it a night when Honda Media in Japan sent us a link to the first images of the all-new Concept D set to premiere this week at Auto Shanghai 2015.

While the pictures are tantalizing to say the least, we’re left hanging in the void awaiting more details. All we know for sure is the name of the concept and the following tidbits of information:

“Jointly with Guangqi Honda Automobile Co., Ltd. and Dongfeng Honda Automobile Co., Ltd., Honda will exhibit the world premiere of a concept model for a new SUV exclusively developed for the Chinese market. Other models on display will include the all-new City, which underwent a full model change, and the new CR-V equipped with a completely new powertrain.”

“Concept D is a concept of the most advanced model of the SUV to provide space and high-quality performance with ongoing development, indicating the direction of Chinese model design. A new SUV based on this model is going to be launched and be equipped with advanced safety technologies as a new flagship model of Honda in China.”

Looking at the side view and the angle of the roofline, it appears that this will be a two-row crossover, perhaps based on the CR-V? It looks too small to be sprung from the Pilot. And yet if “D” stands for D segment, it would indeed be based on the Pilot, or on Accord underpinnings.
