Honda S660 Modulo X Preview – Customizing the Mid-Engine Roadster in Japan

By Steve & Tamami Laser

Honda continues to offer special editions of the S660 roadster that was launched in Japan three years ago. The new S660 Modulo X is slated to go on sale at Honda dealers in Japan on July 6. Modulo brand custom parts and accessories have been offered for a variety of Honda models in Japan by Honda Access.

The S660 will become the fifth Modulo X complete model in Honda’s limited-edition series. Others include the N-BOX Modulo X in December 2012, N-ONE Modulo X in July 2015, StepWGN Modulo X in October 2016, and Freed Modulo X in December 2017.

As a modern successor to Honda’s first car, the Sports 360 from 1962, the S660 features a mid-ship engine layout, rear-wheel drive, a low center of gravity and a snug cockpit for two.

S660 Modulo X special edition features begin up front with a unique bumper and integrated grille, LED foglights, black mirrors, and Bordeaux Red roll top. Exterior color choices include exclusive Alabaster Silver Metallic, along with Premium Star While, Admiral Gray Metallic, and French Blue Pearl.

Around back is a special lower rear bumper and active rear spoiler. The S660 Modulo X also features a dedicated suspension with adjustable five-stage dampers, plus an enhanced braking system with drilled rotors and sports brake pads.

Modulo X rides on unique alloy wheels coated with Stealth Black paint. Wheel sizes seem small by today’s standards, with 15-inches up front and 16-inches in the rear. However, they look really attractive and fit well with the S660’s design.

Inside are exclusive sports seats trimmed with leather and LuxSued® in Bordeaux Red and Black with the Modulo X logo. There’s a special Modulo X logo meter, a titanium shift knob for models equipped with the 6-speed manual gearbox, and a leather shift knob for those with the CVT.

The driver is treated to a matching Modulo X leather steering wheel in Bordeaux Red and Black, aluminum console plate, handbrake cover, and instrument panel soft pad.

Customers can select additional Honda Access genuine accessories including the Gathers Sky Sound InterNavi system that includes a dashtop-mounted screen with small navigation unit.

The “Top Carrier” accessory shown above is designed to hold up to 10 kg of gear (it’s like an external trunk) with a design that’s said to be aerodynamically efficient.

Our Quick Look at the S660 Komorebi in Japan

During our visit to the Tokyo Motor Show last fall, we took a quick look at another special edition S660 called Komorebi. We include it here to show how the S660 looks on video, and also offer a peek inside the engine compartment.

Honda’s S660 Special β #komorebi edition (that’s the official name) is dressed with new light-tone trim on the seats and dash, and sports a new Ivory Pearl exterior color along with a tan roll-back top.

The 660cc turbocharged engine is mated to a CVT transmission. The car features Active City Braking (low-speed collision mitigation) while exterior color choices include Premium Star White Pearl and Flame Red.
