2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 Preview – New Electric Supertruck with e4WD and CrabWalk

By Steve & Tamami Laser

The long wait is over, and GMC has finally revealed the new 2022 Hummer EV. This all-electric pickup that brings back the Hummer nameplate (as a sub-brand) is called a “supertruck,” based on its on- and off-road performance potential. It also offers an array of super-cool features and capabilities.

Instead of converting an existing pickup to electric propulsion, GMC created a completely new vehicle. The initial Hummer EV, dubbed Edition 1, is slated to become the first General Motors vehicle to employ the new Ultium battery architecture. Production is expected to start later next year at GM’s Factory Zero Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center.

Underneath, Edition 1 has a 24-module Ultium battery pack with a GM-estimated range of 350+ miles. The three-motor e4WD system delivers a combined 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque (est.), and can potentially go from 0-60 in just 3 seconds. Deliveries are expected to begin in fall 2021.

Additional models include: The Hummer EV3X, planned for a Fall 2022 release, with three motors, est. 300+ mile range, and 800 hp/9,500 lb-ft. Hummer EV2X, targeted for Spring 2023, has two motors, est. 300+ mile range, and 625 hp/7,400 lb-ft. EV2, offers the same specs as EV2X, except an est. 250 mi. range.

We really like the design of the new Hummer EV that artfully blends futuristic styling with retro design cues. The Infinity roof features transparent Sky Panels that can be removed, along with the I-Bar mounting frame, for a wide-open feeling.

The modular roof panels can be stored in the front “frunk,” when equipped with dealer-available accessory storage tray and cases. The spacious compartment is another benefit of the compact EV powertrain architecture.

Hummer EV is fitted with the GMC MultiPro Tailgate. Premiered on the GMC Sierra, this includes six functions for increased user flexibility: Primary gate, load stop, easy access, wide step, inner gate load stop, and inner gate with a working surface.

Edition 1 also includes an Extreme Off-Road Package, that adds 35-inch-OD Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, underbody armor, rock sliders and underbody camera.

CrabWalk is another Edition 1 feature with 4 Wheel Steering. Rear wheels can be locked in the forward position, turn opposite the front, or turn the same as the front wheels.

Adaptive Air Suspension with Extract Mode capability allows the suspension to be raised about 6 inches to help clear obstacles. Other driver-selectable settings include Automatic Entry and Exit, to lower the suspension for easier entry and exit, and Aero Mode, to lower the ride height at highway speeds.

Hummer EV has five-passenger seating, a vinyl floor with rubber surfaces made from recycled materials, multiple storage spaces, and stylized “H” trim elements. Edition 1 includes a unique Lunar Horizon interior with Tech Bronze accents and special badges.

The high-tech dash is fitted with two large screens: There’s a 13.4-inch touchscreen, part of the infotainment system from GMC, and a 12.3-inch driver information display. Also included is a Bose® Premium sound system with Centerpoint® surround and 14 speakers.

Drive Mode Control includes Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road and Terrain, and My Mode, with an Adrenaline setting. Each mode tailors propulsion, suspension, and chassis settings, with torque sent to the wheels.

Among the available displays, Off-Road widgets include a drift gauge (with maximum values), g-force articulation (friction circle), torque output and torque vectoring, e-Locker engagement, pitch and roll angles (with maximum values), wheel travel, chassis ride height, and more.

Along with all these cool features, GMC plans to offer a lengthy list of nearly 200 accessories for Hummer EV customers to dress up and personalize their rides.

* GMC says that performance targets, estimates and capability specifications are based on computer-aided analysis and simulation using virtual engineering tools. Estimates may vary depending on model and trim. Actual production model and results may vary. EPA estimates are not yet available.
