2021 Toyota GR Supra Preview – New A91 Edition, More Powerful Six, New Turbo Four Debut

By Steve & Tamami Laser

When the 2020 Toyota GR Supra made its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show one year ago, it paid homage to the first four Supra generations with an inline 6-cylinder engine driving the rear wheels. Let’s look at what’s new for the 2021 model year.

2021 GR Supra Lineup

For the 2021 model year, the GR Supra’s 6-cylinder engine receives a boost in output while the lineup gains a new A91 limited edition. And for the first time, a 4-cylinder Supra will debut to bridge the gap between the smaller Toyota 86 and flagship 6-cylinder Supra.

Output for the 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo is boosted from 335 to 382 horsepower while torque increases from 365 to 368 lb.-ft. Toyota says the engine produces more torque at higher rpm and retains an eagerness to rev with turbine-like smoothness. The engine continues to team up with an 8-speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters. Other changes include chassis mods for increased roll resistance and enhanced cornering stability.

The new GR Supra A91 Edition will be limited to 1,000 units for the 2021 model year. Powered by the inline 6-cylinder engine, it offers several distinctive elements, including a choice of Nocturnal or new, exclusive Refraction colors.

On the outside, the A91 Edition sports a black rear carbon-fiber lip spoiler, C-pillar graphics and carbon-fiber mirror caps.

Matte black wheels are included on the A91 Edition’s roster of standard equipment, and so are red-painted front Brembo® brake calipers with the “Toyota Supra” logo.

Inside, the A91 Edition’s cabin is fitted with black Alcantara® leather-trim with blue contrasts, also exclusive to this model. An 8.8-inch center touchscreen display is standard on A91 and all Supras for 2021.

The new 2.0 becomes the entry model, equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with twin-scroll turbo, direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve timing. It’s rated at 255 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and teams with an 8-speed automatic.

In addition to its expected lower price tag, the 2.0 is more than 200 pounds lighter than the Supra 3.0 thanks to the reduced weight of the engine, smaller front brake rotors, elimination of the Active Differential and Active Suspension found on the 3.0, manually adjustable seats (vs. power), and a four-speaker audio system.

A new Safety and Technology Package debuts as an option for 2.0 and 3.0 models. Features include Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind-Spot Monitor, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Parking Sensors with Emergency Braking function, navigation, 12-speaker, 500-watt JBL audio, wireless Apple CarPlay® compatible (iOS only), and Supra Connected Services with up to a four-year trial.

Toyota expects the 2021 models will start arriving at U.S. dealers in June 2020. The GR Supra continues to be built by Magna Steyr at its vehicle assembly facility in Graz, Austria.
