2021 Honda S660 Modulo X Version Z Preview – Future Collectible – S660 Discontinued in 2022

By Steve & Tamami Laser

Honda has introduced a new special edition of its S660 Modulo X mid-engine roadster in Japan called “Version Z,” sporting unique customized parts and accessories. Version Z (below) is destined to become a future collectible as Honda says it will be the last special specification car before S660 production ends next year.

Our first encounter occurred at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2013, when Honda introduced the S660 as a concept. When production started in 2015, it was billed as a modern successor to Honda’s first car, the Sports 360 from 1962. The S660 Modulo X special edition, fitted with custom Modulo brand parts from Honda Access, made its debut as a complete model in 2018.

Honda says the S660 Modulo X Version Z expresses gratitude to the customers who have purchased more than 30,000 units of the mini roadster. Version Z offers a unique exterior color, Sonic Gray Pearl, and is also available in Premium Star White Pearl.

Along with Modulo X front and rear fascias, additional exterior mods include black chrome emblems and a dedicated active rear spoiler. The S660 roadster features a mid-ship engine/rear-wheel-drive layout and a low center of gravity, with near optimal 45-55 front-rear weight balance for performance cornering.

The development of the original S660 started with a product planning proposal to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Honda R&D.

Version Z rides on special Stealth Black finish alloy wheels. Modulo X models are distinguished from regular production S660s with a dedicated suspension, including adjustable five-stage dampers, plus an enhanced braking system with drilled rotors and sports brake pads.

The interior, trimmed with a Bordeaux Red and Black motif, features sport seats wrapped with leather and Lux Suede® topped with the Modulo X logo.

Special carbon-style finishes are included on the meter visor panel and center console, while the door panels feature Lux Suede® and leather with gray stitching. Also included is an exclusive center bag with the Modulo X logo.

An aluminum console plate with Modulo X Version Z logo is included to signify that this is a very special S660 model.

Customers can opt for the Gathers Sky Sound InterNavi system with a dashtop-mounted screen and navigation unit, as an additional Honda Access genuine accessory for the S660.

The limited edition S660 Modulo X Version Z includes a 6-speed manual transmission and unchanged 660cc DOHC turbocharged engine. The InterNavi system is available as an option.

Our Quick Look at the S660 Komorebi in Japan

We checked out another S660 special edition, called Komorebi, during our visit to the Tokyo Motor Show press days in 2017. We’re offering a flashback of our close encounter (below), along with a peek inside the engine compartment.

We made this video to highlight the special S660 Komorebi edition that Honda displayed at a previous Tokyo Motor Show. (video: CarNichiWa.com)

Honda’s S660 Komorebi was dressed with light-tone trim on the seats and dash, and sported an Ivory Pearl exterior with a tan roll-back top.

This car featured a Continuously Variable Transmission with 7-speed paddle shifters and sports mode. The S660’s 3-cylinder DOHC engine is sourced from Honda’s popular N Series in Japan and includes a turbocharger.

While we wished that Honda might have found a way to bring the S660 to America, the challenges in re-engineering the car to meet U.S. emission and crash-tests were simply too costly for such a low-volume product. Meanwhile, we’re wondering what Honda is planning for its next sports car?
