Land Rover staged the global debut of the all-new Defender this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Described as an icon reimagined for the 21st century, the new Defender is instantly recognizable as a Land Rover, it’s loaded with advanced all-terrain technologies, and fitted with user-friendly features. And it will be available in America, offering a choice of 90 and 110 body styles, an array of trim levels, and accessory packs.
The thoroughly modern Defender takes the place of its predecessor that had a lengthy 33 year run and was last sold in the states in 1997. Land Rover says that the new Defender’s high sills, short overhangs, and rear-mounted spare tire are designed to enhance off-road capability.

With its lightweight aluminum-alloy D7x platform, the new Defender is said to offer the stiffest body structure that Land Rover has built. In addition to completing “62,000” engineering tests, prototypes were driven millions of kilometers across some of earth’s harshest environments.
Defender features permanent all-wheel-drive plus a twin-speed automatic transmission, center differential, and available Active Locking Rear Differential. New Configurable Terrain Response lets drivers fine-tune vehicle settings while ClearSight Ground View® technology helps them see the trail ahead on the center display.
Powertrain choices for U.S. models include the P300 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gas engine with 296 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, and P400 3.0-liter in-line 6-cylinder MHEV with 395 hp and 406 lb.-ft. Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology, designed to harvest and store energy normally lost during deceleration, includes a 48V lithium-ion battery, belt-driven starter generator, and electric supercharger.
Inside, Defender’s roots are purposely showing, paying homage to the original. Structural elements and fittings that are usually hidden from view are exposed and finished with textured powder coat. Durable rubber flooring is underfoot while a dash-mounted gear shifter frees up space for center console storage.
Designed for comfort and durability, upholstery and trim choices include canvas-inspired Robust Woven Textile with grained-leather seating surfaces. The top Defender X has unique Windsor leather combined with Kvadrat Steelcut Premium wool textile. Available veneers include open-pore wood with Rough-cut, Walnut, or Natural Smoked Dark Oak veneer.
High-tech features abound including a 10-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ connectivity. Defender introduces a new Pivi Pro infotainment system with smartphone-like interface, customizable layout, plus Software-Over-The-Air updates.
Defender owners can select from four optional Accessory Packs, as well as a list of 170 individual accessories. The Adventure Pack targets those who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors. It includes a portable rinse system with a hose and shower plus a 1.7 gallon (6.5-liter) pressurized water reservoir that can be used to rinse gear like boots, wetsuits or even bikes.

The cargo compartment-mounted integrated air compressor can be used to inflate vehicle tires, bike tires, airbeds or other inflatables. There’s an exterior side-mounted gear carrier that’s lockable and waterproof. Easy to access, it can accommodate items such as wetsuits or hiking books. Other features include a bright rear scuff plate, front and rear mudflaps and a spare wheel cover.
Adventure Pack upgrades include an A-frame protection bar to help protect the front of the vehicle, fixed or deployable side steps, bright side tubes, cargo floor rubber mat, and deep-sided rubber mats for the passenger compartment.
Land Rover says that the Country Pack equips Defender to “embrace the elements and make every journey truly memorable.” Features include front and rear classic mudflaps, full-height cargo-space partition, portable rinse system, bright rear scuff plate, and wheel arch protection.

A matte-black hood decal, featuring 90 or 110 lettering, adds a finishing touch. But wait, there’s more: Upgrades include a front expedition protection system, deployable roof ladder, fixed or deployable side steps, bright side tubes, plus rubber mats.
Defender owners can “conquer the concrete jungle” with the Urban Pack. Inside, the driver is treated to bright metal pedals for a sporty look, while the exterior is enhanced with a bright rear scuff plate, spare wheel cover, and front undershield.
