2019 Suzuki Jimny Preview – Next Generation Authentic Off-Roader Heads to UK

While Suzuki stopped selling its small cars and trucks in the U.S. a few years ago, it continues to offer a wide range of models in Japan, Europe, Asia and other markets. One of them is the Jimny, a popular off-roader that’s sold nearly three million units since its introduction in 1970. The new fourth-generation Jimny 4WD is set to go on sale in the UK in early 2019 following its debut this summer in Japan.

Suzuki has done a great job in the styling department by mixing heritage design cues with a more modern, yet still boxy and rugged, silhouette. The styling is said to express the vehicle’s off-road ability as well as improving outward visibility for the driver with repositioned A-pillars. “Kinetic Yellow” is a new color that stands out in the city and during off-road adventures.

In Japan, the Jimny is sold as a minicar (kei car) with a specially tuned 660 cc R06A turbo engine, and a compact car with a newly developed 1.5-liter K15B engine. The latter will be the only choice for the UK market, rated at 101 PS (75 kW) and 140 Nm torque (95 lb.-ft.) teamed with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission and part-time 4WD.

Jimny is designed for serious off-road travel with an approach angle of 37 degrees, a ramp breakover angle of 28 degrees, and departure angle of 49 degrees. Brake LSD traction control is designed to automatically brake slipping wheels diagonal from each other to redistribute torque. Suzuki says the system allows Jimny to escape slippery surfaces as well as bumpy rough roads.

Underneath, Jimny rides on an enhanced ladder frame with a new “x-member,” two additional crossmembers for increased torsional rigidity, and eight rubber body mounts to help enhance ride comfort and stability. Suzuki says Jimny is one of the few authentic off-roaders with a rigid axle in the front and rear.

Jimny’s standard AllGrip Pro is a part-time 4WD system with low-range transfer gear that the automaker says can be switched from 2H (rear-wheel drive) to 4H (four-wheel-drive high range) at speeds up to 62 mph via the floor-mounted lever. Going from 4H to 4L (low-range) requires a complete stop.

Inside, the cabin features a modern appearance with a horizontal dash design and vertical meter cluster and center console. Suzuki says the layout helps the driver “recognize the angle of the vehicle in rough and mountainous terrain.” Switches and controls are designed for ease of use during off-road driving and when wearing gloves.

For greater passenger comfort, the Jimny is fitted with wider front seat cushion frames while the sliding range of the front seats has been increased and offer a greater range of adjustment than previous models.

Split-folding rear seats fold completely flat for expanded cargo carrying flexibility. Five hook points are positioned beneath each of the rear quarter windows in addition to four floor-mounted luggage hooks to help secure cargo.

Standard safety features include Dual Sensor Brake Support, Hill Descent Control, Hill Hold Control, Lane Departure Warning, six airbags, ABS with Brake Assist, ESP, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and High Beam Assist.

The lineup for the UK includes the Jimny SZ4 with standard air conditioning, cruise control, DSB, CD player with DAB Radio, Bluetooth and front fog lights. Moving up to the SZ5 nets 15-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with washers, rear privacy glass, climate control, a 7-inch touchscreen navigation system with smartphone link, 3-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats.
