2018 Honda Freed Hybrid – Sporty Modulo X Edition Goes On Sale in Japan

By Steve & Tamami Laser

Honda has launched a new sporty Modulo X version of the Freed compact van in Japan. While Modulo custom parts and accessories are offered for a variety of Honda models in Japan, this marks the fourth complete Modulo X vehicle offered at Honda dealers.

The Freed follows the success of the N-BOX Modulo X launched in 2012, the N-ONE Modulo X in 2015, and the STEP WGN Modulo X in 2016. Enhancements for the Freed include exclusive design treatments for the exterior with a new grille, front aero bumper, LED fog lights, rear spoiler, mirrors and wheels.

The Freed’s interior gains piano black tones for the instrument panel, a special leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a 9-inch premium inter-navi (Gathers) touchscreen display with Modulo X opening screen graphics.

Also included is a windshield-mounted (Gathers) drive recorder with timekeeping recording function, along with a navigation-linked ETC 2.0 in-vehicle unit.

Passengers are treated to special Black and Mocha combi seats while premium floor mats rest underfoot embroidered with Modulo X logos to match the seatbacks.

In addition to the cosmetic upgrades, Freed Modulo X includes these special alloy wheels plus a dedicated, upgraded suspension (below) to deliver sporty ride and handling.

Like the regular production Freed, gasoline models of the Modulo X are equipped with a 1.5-liter direct injection DOHC i-VTEC engine and high-efficiency CVT, while the hybrid features a 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle DOHC i-VTEC engine paired with SPORT HYBRID i-DCD (intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive) and one-motor 7-speed DCT.

In the tradition of Honda’s small vans, Freed offers a remarkably spacious and flexible interior with seating for six or seven passengers plus the ability to carry long cargo inside the cabin. (The above photo shows the regular production Freed’s interior.)
